What the heck happened??

So we have seen improvement with the NAC supplement, which started on Sunday, February 14th. K seems to be sleeping in longer. He is now holding conversations with us, his parents, as well as family and others we see at Church. Adding a second dose begins tomorrow!

And then we recently started Prilosec, following his GI appointment this past Monday, February 29. K is not handling it well. I know it seems early or too soon to judge, but it appears to make him miserable and his behavior is outlandish. He shuts down completely and refuses to hint in any way what may be bothering him. Days before he was finally telling me his head hurt and showing me where, that was progress. Today he is not even close to acting like his usual self, but his actions remind me of when his stomach is hurting him. I tried giving him some TUMS; he has toned down a bit. And after digging around online, I found that if taking medication like Prilosec and you remove it from the capsule sheath, you need to take an antacid. Well, his doctor didn't mention this at all, simply said mix it in with some applesauce. Crap.

Regardless, we feel it is time to say nope to Prilosec and call in for an alternative suggestion. I will add this, being put on an acid reflux medicine was not really what we had in mind. After expressing our concerns aside from having a history with reflux as an infant, we believe there is a deeper cause. But, he needs to have his adenoid removed. I do not wish to bombard our son with a ton of new ways of healing because the surgery is very important and it will change a lot of issues, possibly for the better or for the worse.

The behavior he is exhibiting since Prilosec:

  • seeking sensory input and output: smacking the wall, smacking big bouncy ball, balancing on ball, squeezing mothers arm/leg out of frustration
  • hiding in his dark bedroom, sometimes playing, sometimes perseverance
  • covering his ears
  • a lot of crying followed by drool
  • headaches
  • no appetite, not even preferred items
  • increased thirst
  • while out at a store: avoidance, on the floor curled up in a ball, pressing entire body awkwardly into a bench, blanking out while crying
  • defiance
  • raising his voice, repeating no to everything said
  • frustrated
  • angry, so angry it turns into an isolated rage (tone of voice, word choice)
  • unpleasant
Improvements since NAC prior to Prilosec:
  • a lot more talking, spontaneous questions such as "What are you making" or "What's that smell"
  • more defiance, but willing and able to work through it
  • better attention and focus, minimal distraction
  • vocabulary expansion, whether he retained words over time and never used them, he is surprising us!
  • drawing a lot more; detailed images from memory
  • able to tell me specifics about his drawing and what is happening

EDIT: at 4:30, he was able to tell us that his belly hurt "right here". Ugh...
